TLILIC0005 Licence to operate a boom-type elevating work platform (boom length 11 meters or more)

Typically known as EWP or WP operations, our course covers the functions required to operate a boom-type elevating work platform with a boom length of 11 meters or more. WP operations require a High-Risk Work Licence (HRWL) issued by Work Place Health and Safety QLD (WHSQ). Ascent Training Solutions has developed a high-quality detailed training course that prepares you to perform the operations of an EWP with high importance on safety in Brisbane.

The Elevating Work Platform (WP) course provides you with the skills and expertise necessary to safely operate a boom-type elevating work platform where the boom is 11 metres or more in length. It can be a telescopic, hinged or articulated device used to support a platform where workers, materials and equipment may be raised.

The training in its current form meets the standards specified in the state and territory licencing and unit of competency requirements.

An individual operating a boom-type elevating work platform must be able to plan the job, conduct routine checks, and set-up, operate, shut down and secure elevating work platforms. All of these activities will be taught by our highly knowledgeable trainers through written and practical teachings at our on-site training facility in Brisbane. The course material will include;

  • WHS/OHS legislation, codes of practice and standards to comply with.
  • Identification of hazards and the control measures necessary to ensure the safety of all workers and equipment.
  • All procedures are adhered to regarding safety equipment, routine pre-operational and post-start checks and the documenting of damaged equipment
  • Procedures for driving, positioning and stabilising an elevated work platform at the workplace.
  • Load estimation using mathematical procedures.
  • The importance of communication in the workplace especially in dangerous situations.
  • Understanding of elevated work platform manufacturer's instructions and specifications.
  • Knowledge of ground stability and the various soil types associated with setting up an elevated work platform.

In completion of this unit, the successful candidate will have the ability to operate a boom type elevating work platform safely along with the following tasks;

  • Site specific emergency procedures and the use of safety equipment such as harnesses and anchor points
  • Pre-start, start-up, operational and shut down checks to ensure the safe operation of the elevated work platform.
  • Communicate effectively in the workplace with supervisors and co-workers.
  • Ensure appropriate methods of communication such as hand signals, signage and two-way radios
  • Record and report all relevant information regarding the operations of an elevated work platform.
  • Apply risk assessment and hazard control methods associated with the positioning and safe operating of and elevated work platform.
  • Understanding of the relevant Australian standards, code of practice, legislation and site specific documentation relevant to elevated work platforms.
  • Carry out routine maintenance checks on equipment.

All elements of this unit of competency are essential in completing your Elevated Work Platform training. On successful completion of this course, you will be issued with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for TLILIC0005 Licence to operate boom-type elevating work platform (boom length 11 meters or more), which enables you to be eligible to apply for a WP class HRWL licence through Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ).

This is a 3-day course involving high quality face to face training at our training facility in Pinkenba, QLD.

Onsite training and assessing is available at your company location. However, in such cases, we would conduct an inspection of the equipment that will be used to ensure the safety and conditions of the equipment is ideal for on-site training and meets the WHSQ requirements for assessment.

There are no pre-requisites for this course however, to undertake formal assessment and obtain a HRWL you must be at least 18 years of age and be proficient (read and write) with basic English.

We would also require the candidates to wear basic PPE such as hi-vis, safety helmet, boots (preferably steel capped) and wear sun protection during the training.

Any medical problems or health conditions are required to disclosed before training commences.

A $200 non-refundable booking fee is to be paid prior to the course to secure your spot. Full course fee is to be paid prior to the commencement of formal assessment.

On successful completion:

  • You will be issued a Statement of Attainment for TLILIC0005 Licence to operate a boom-type elevating work platform (boom length 11 meters or more) making you eligible for a WP class HRWL license.
  • LHRW Assessment Summary – AS1 form to apply for your High Risk Work Licence through Workplace Health and Safety Queensland
  • Industry knowledge and skills to perform the operation of a forklift.

Subsidies are available for eligible candidates through Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ). CSQ is an independent industry-funded body supporting employers, workers, apprentices and career seekers in the building and construction industry.
