EWP course overview
Our EWP Under 11m training program covers the skills and knowledge required to meet the national standard, often referred to as the industry known Yellow Card Course. This program will provide you with the expertise to safely operate a boom-type elevating work platform (EWP) and scissor lift under 11m. While this course specifically delivers the nationally recognised unit of competency RIIHAN301E, it has been developed to align with industry standards – such as those found in the EWPA Yellow Card course – to ensure participants meet all worksite requirements.
As part of the course, participants will learn safety aspects, hazard evaluation, pre and post-operational checks, and the practical operation of an EWP under 11m.
This course is also delivered in a package with the High Risk Work Licence (over 11m WP Course).
Delivery is completed face-to-face with a mix of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical training.

What does the EWP Under 11m course cover?
The EWP Under 11m course (RIIHAN301E) is nationally recognised training that covers the safe operation of boom-type elevating work platforms and scissor lifts with a boom length under 11 metres. Participants learn safety requirements, hazard identification and evaluation, and pre and post operational checks. Training is delivered face-to-face with a mix of classroom theory and hands-on practical. If you need to operate EWPs with a boom length of 11 metres or more, a High Risk Work Licence (WP class) is required – Ascent delivers both, and this course is also available as a package with our WP licence course.
What is the difference between a yellow card and a nationally recognised unit of competency?
The “yellow card” is an industry accreditation issued by the Elevating Work Platform Association (EWPA) — it is not a nationally recognised qualification. RIIHAN301E is a nationally recognised unit of competency registered on training.gov.au under the Australian Skills Framework, meaning it is formally recognised across all states and industries. Ascent Training Solutions delivers RIIHAN301E, not the EWPA yellow card program. For most employers and principal contractors, the nationally recognised unit of competency is the stronger and more portable credential.
Do I need a licence to operate an EWP under 11m?
No High Risk Work Licence is required to operate a boom-type EWP or scissor lift under 11 metres. However, you must hold a recognised unit of competency – RIIHAN301E – to demonstrate you can operate the equipment safely and in line with industry standards. Most employers and principal contractors require this as a minimum before allowing unsupervised operation on site.
What do I receive on completion of the EWP Under 11m course?
On successful completion you will receive a Statement of Attainment for RIIHAN301E issued by Ascent Training Solutions, along with an operator card. These are your proof of competency and what you’ll present to employers and site supervisors.
