Course overview

Our Confined Spaces course is a nationally recognised one-day course delivered as a cluster of two units – RIIWHS202E Enter and work in confined spaces and MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres. It gives participants the skills and knowledge to conduct risk assessments, enter and work in confined spaces, act as a standby person, and test the atmosphere before and during entry. The course is designed for anyone whose work involves entering an enclosed or partially enclosed space, such as boilers, pipes, sewers, tanks and vessels.

In the confined spaces unit you will learn how to identify potential hazards, assess risks, and put control measures in place to keep yourself and others safe when working in or around confined spaces. In the gas testing unit you will learn how to select, calibrate and use gas detection equipment, test for oxygen, flammable and toxic gases, interpret the readings, and record and act on the results.

Most confined space work requires the atmosphere to be tested before and during entry, so the two units are delivered together as a single clustered course — giving you the full skill set employers expect, completed in one day.

Delivery of this course is completed face-to-face with a mix of classroom-based theory training and hands-on practical training.

Half day refresher courses are available*

Frequently Asked Questions

Got a question about our Confined Spaces course? Find your answer below.

Where can I get my Confined Spaces ticket in Brisbane?

Ascent Training Solutions delivers the Confined Spaces course at our purpose-built training facility in Richlands, Brisbane. The course is delivered as a cluster of two nationally recognised units, RIIWHS202E Enter and work in confined spaces and MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres. You can view the full unit details on Training.gov.au – Confined Spaces and Gas Testing.

Are there any prerequisites for the Confined Spaces & Gas Testing course?

No prior experience or qualifications are required for the full one-day course. If you are booking the half-day refresher course, you must provide a Statement of Attainment or USI Transcript confirming prior completion of these units (or its successor unit) before attending.

What does the Confined Spaces & Gas Testing course cover?

The course covers two nationally recognised units: RIIWHS202E Enter and work in confined spaces and MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres. You’ll learn how to work safely in enclosed or restricted spaces such as tanks, pits, vessels and ducts – identifying hazards, understanding entry permits and safe work procedures, and responding to emergencies including rescue. You’ll also learn how to use gas detection equipment to test an atmosphere and interpret the results. Training includes both theory and practical components, and all study materials are provided on the day.

Why is gas testing included in the Confined Spaces course?

Before anyone enters a confined space, the atmosphere has to be tested for oxygen levels and for flammable or toxic gases, and it often needs to be monitored while work continues. Delivering Gas test atmospheres (MSMWHS217) alongside Confined Spaces means you can carry out that testing yourself, which is why the two units are now run together as a single clustered course.

What do I receive once I complete the Confined Spaces course?

On successful completion you will receive a Statement of Attainment for both units issued by Ascent Training Solutions, along with a Confined Spaces operator card. The Statement of Attainment is your formal proof of competency and is the document you’ll present to employers and principal contractors.

I recently completed training with Accent Training Solutions, and it was honestly one of the best RTO experiences I’ve had. The facilities are brand new and purpose-built, which makes a big difference when you’re trying to focus and get the most out of the course. The team were extremely friendly and approachable, and they went out of their way to make sure I fully understood everything being taught. They didn’t just rush through the material—they took the time to ensure everyone was confident and competent. The trainers are a great bunch of guys who all work really well together, which creates a positive and easy-going learning environment. We had constant showers of rain throughout the week, which meant the lads stayed back and made sure everything still got covered properly. It really showed their professionalism and commitment. Overall, I’d highly recommend Accent Training Solutions to anyone looking for quality training in a well-run, supportive environment.

I passed the Dogmans, C6 (60 tonne slew crane) Dozer, Roller and Tele handler course's/ tickets recently. The Training and assessment team on-site are brilliant. The course's are conducted in a safe, educational and fun way. The staff have fair but firm control over trainee groups in both theory and practical lessons. Highly recommended by me. Will be going through Ascent for any of my future training. Thanks.

Theodore Calabrese is a great teacher and really knows his stuff. And a big thank you to Kevin for running the show in the background and sorting out anything I required when onsite, especially after another company in the area pulled out last minute. Ascent Training truly stepped up when I needed it. These are the guys you want to be training with. If I could, I’d give them 6 stars that’s exactly what they deserve! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
