Scaffolding Tickets: Meet your trainer John

When it comes to scaffolding tickets, experience counts, and John has it in spades. With a career spanning over four decades and experience working in some of the biggest names in construction and engineering has equipped him with the insights and skills he now brings to Ascent Training Solutions classroom.

Embracing his role in scaffolding training

John’s shift from being on the tools to teaching was a necessary pivot as physical demands became challenging.

“There comes a point when your body tells you it’s time to find a different way to contribute, even though your mind is as sharp as ever,” John explains. This realisation came when he was employed to operate a crane but found himself more often in a mentorship role, training employees on safe operations.

After being recommended to become a trainer with Ascent by his supervisor, he completed his Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, marking the beginning of his new path as a trainer. “It was about passing on my knowledge to the up-and-coming scaffolders, ensuring they’re as prepared as I was, if not more,” he said.

Inside Ascent’s scaffolding safety course

The scaffolding safety course at Ascent was developed by John and it’s designed for anyone involved with scaffolding at any level.

“The goal is to instil a deep understanding and respect for the equipment and the tasks at hand. It’s not just about knowing how to put things together, but understanding the environment you’re working in,” he points out.

The course covers everything from the basics of erecting and dismantling scaffolds to advanced safety protocols and emergency procedures. It’s tailored for new entrants to the field as well as seasoned workers looking to update their skills.

His advice to aspiring scaffolders

John’s biggest piece of advice to newcomers is to view scaffolding not just as a job but as a gateway to various opportunities within the construction industry.

“A scaffolding ticket is a license to learn,” he often says. “Scaffolding opens doors to multiple paths—you can move into safety, supervision, or specialised project management. Be open to opportunities and always be willing to learn.”
