EWP course overview

Our EWP Under 11m training program covers the skills and knowledge required to meet the national standard, often referred to as the industry known Yellow Card Course. This program will provide you with the expertise to safely operate a boom-type elevating work platform (EWP) and scissor lift under 11m. While this course specifically delivers the nationally recognised unit of competency RIIHAN301E, it has been developed to align with industry standards – such as those found in the EWPA Yellow Card course – to ensure participants meet all worksite requirements.

As part of the course, participants will learn safety aspects, hazard evaluation, pre and post-operational checks, and the practical operation of an EWP under 11m.

This course is also delivered in a package with the High Risk Work Licence (over 11m WP Course).

Delivery is completed face-to-face with a mix of classroom-based theory and hands-on practical training.

This particular program has been developed in conjunction with the industry association EWPA Yellow Card course, to not only deliver the nationally recognised unit of competency requirements, but also to the standard of industry requirements.(As part of the course, participants will learn the safety aspects, hazard evaluation, pre and post operational checks and recognition of the operation of an EWP under 11m.

This course is also delivered in a package with the High Risk Work Licenced, over 11m WP Course.

What does the EWP Under 11m course cover?

The EWP Under 11m course (RIIHAN301E) is nationally recognised training that covers the safe operation of boom-type elevating work platforms and scissor lifts with a boom length under 11 metres. Participants learn safety requirements, hazard identification and evaluation, and pre and post operational checks. Training is delivered face-to-face with a mix of classroom theory and hands-on practical. If you need to operate EWPs with a boom length of 11 metres or more, a High Risk Work Licence (WP class) is required – Ascent delivers both, and this course is also available as a package with our WP licence course.

What is the difference between a yellow card and a nationally recognised unit of competency?

The “yellow card” is an industry accreditation issued by the Elevating Work Platform Association (EWPA) — it is not a nationally recognised qualification. RIIHAN301E is a nationally recognised unit of competency registered on training.gov.au under the Australian Skills Framework, meaning it is formally recognised across all states and industries. Ascent Training Solutions delivers RIIHAN301E, not the EWPA yellow card program. For most employers and principal contractors, the nationally recognised unit of competency is the stronger and more portable credential.

Do I need a licence to operate an EWP under 11m?

No High Risk Work Licence is required to operate a boom-type EWP or scissor lift under 11 metres. However, you must hold a recognised unit of competency – RIIHAN301E – to demonstrate you can operate the equipment safely and in line with industry standards. Most employers and principal contractors require this as a minimum before allowing unsupervised operation on site.

What do I receive on completion of the EWP Under 11m course?

On successful completion you will receive a Statement of Attainment for RIIHAN301E issued by Ascent Training Solutions, along with an operator card. These are your proof of competency and what you’ll present to employers and site supervisors.

I recently completed training with Accent Training Solutions, and it was honestly one of the best RTO experiences I’ve had. The facilities are brand new and purpose-built, which makes a big difference when you’re trying to focus and get the most out of the course. The team were extremely friendly and approachable, and they went out of their way to make sure I fully understood everything being taught. They didn’t just rush through the material—they took the time to ensure everyone was confident and competent. The trainers are a great bunch of guys who all work really well together, which creates a positive and easy-going learning environment. We had constant showers of rain throughout the week, which meant the lads stayed back and made sure everything still got covered properly. It really showed their professionalism and commitment. I passed the Dogmans, C6 (60 tonne slew crane) Dozer, Roller and Tele handler course's/ tickets recently. The Training and assessment team on-site are brilliant. Great staff here. They are very friendly helpful and experienced. Great facilities and equipment. I have just completed my vehicle loading crane and dog man courses. My tutors Robbie (vehicle loading crane) and Mark and Gerry (Dogman) were awesome they made the whole experience worthwhile. I had the privilege to sit my dogman ticket at Ascent training. Was under the tutelage of Theo and Irish Mark for theory and practical. At first glance the theory assessment was daunting and intimidating but with Theo’s tutoring and knowledge also mixed with his awesome people skills and being able to relate the questions to scenarios or situations that were easier to understand and answer made the theory side of the course a lot easier than expected. Theo also took time during classes to help guide the students who weren’t ‘book’ learners. Theo doing that made the students who struggled understand easier and were able to grasp a hold of the course. Irish Mark was awesome his enthusiasm when out on the floor was great but also his ability to teach the class in a calmer way that we understood easier. If any of us were struggling in each way Mark was able to give us little ‘tips and tricks’ that we could try and made it easier to understand in our own way. I also came across Jerry who was helping instruct with our practical dogman course. Jerry was also awesome and was able to also give tips and tricks that made it easier to grasp the concepts of what we were struggling with at the time. Theo, Irish Mark and Jerry. Absolutely appreciate and am really grateful to have crossed paths and been under your guys wings the last week. Kevin, top facilities and awesome compound. Highly recommended.

Mark Lynch was my trainer for the dogman course and he really helped me and the whole class. I went into my theory test very confident because the lessons were full of information. In the practical lessons Mark really helped me understand dogging and how to sling loads up safely.
