Course overviews

Our gantry or overhead crane course is a nationally recognised one-day course that gives participants the skills and knowledge to safely operate a gantry or overhead crane. It is designed for operators working with simple gantry or overhead cranes that have three or fewer powered movements, such as those used across manufacturing, warehousing, workshops and industrial sites.

Training covers pre-operational inspections, safe set-up, identifying hazards and assessing risks, load handling and slinging, communication methods including hand and whistle signals, moving and landing loads, and shutting down and securing the crane on completion.

This unit provides competency to operate simple gantry or overhead cranes and does not require a High Risk Work Licence. Operators who need to work with more complex bridge and gantry cranes – those with a cabin or more than three powered movements – require a CB Class High Risk Work Licence. See our Bridge and Gantry Crane Course.

Delivery of this course is completed face-to-face with a mix of classroom-based theory training and hands-on practical training.

Did you know?

We offer Conduct lifting operations (RIIHAN203E) and Operate a gantry or overhead crane (RIIHAN305D) as a combined package.

Lift planning and crane operation don’t happen in isolation. Completing Conduct Lifting Operations and Operate a Gantry or Overhead Crane together builds a stronger end-to-end understanding of lifting tasks, from planning the lift through to safely moving and stabilising the load. You’ll build stronger practical skills and be better prepared for real-world lifting operations, making you more capable, more confident, and ultimately more employable on site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got a question about our RIIHHAN305D course? Find your answer below.
Where can I do a gantry or overhead crane course in Brisbane?

Ascent Training Solutions runs the RIIHAN305D Operate a gantry or overhead crane at our purpose-built training facility in Richlands, Brisbane. It’s a nationally recognised one-day course, and you can view the full unit details on Training.gov.au here.

Do I need a High Risk Work Licence to operate a gantry or overhead crane?

Not for simple gantry or overhead cranes with three or fewer powered movements – those are covered by the operational unit RIIHAN305D Operate a gantry or overhead crane, which doesn’t require a High Risk Work Licence. If the crane has a cabin or more than three powered movements, you’ll need the CB Class High Risk Work Licence instead, which we also offer.

What does the gantry or overhead crane course cover?

The course covers operating a gantry or overhead crane safely – pre-operational inspections, setting up, identifying hazards and assessing risks, slinging and handling loads, communication including hand and whistle signals, moving and landing loads, and shutting down and securing the crane. Training includes both theory and practical components, and all study materials are provided on the day.

What’s the difference between RIIHAN305D and the TLILIC0016 licence?

Our RII unit is an operational unit for simple gantry or overhead cranes with three or fewer powered movements, and doesn’t require a licence. TLILIC0016 Licence to operate a bridge and gantry crane is a High Risk Work Licence for more complex bridge and gantry cranes – those operated from a cabin or with more than three powered movements. Which one you need comes down to the type of crane you’ll be operating.

What do I receive once I complete the course?

On successful completion you’ll receive a Statement of Attainment for the completed unit issued by Ascent Training Solutions. This is your formal proof of competency to operate a gantry or overhead crane and is the document you’ll present to employers and site supervisors.
